This project was funded by the Thornhill society, the British Waterways and the Cripplegate Foundation to regenerate the canal towpath in Islington and the city basin. Cally Arts commissioned us to work with a local school to make 4 mosaics, charting the history of the Regent's Canal.
The first mosaic highlights the heyday of the working canal during the early 19th century. The second looked at the trades of the people who immigrated to the area. The third panel, explores industrialisation during the mid 19th and 20th centuries. We looked at different modes of transport from horse-drawn buses to steam trains and helicopters. The final mosaic is a celebration of the canal in its present reincarnation as a leisure resource and natural habitat. It is now a popular London thoroughfare for cyclists, walkers and joggers. The children's mosaics have transformed a neglected and abused space into a vibrant focal point for the community.
