This broad category includes both figurative and abstract design.
The ‘Entertainment’ series of mosaics made by children at William Davis School is a good example of a project using ‘people’ as the focus of the work. We looked at different types of entertainment and celebration such as the funfair and the circus.
At the other end of the spectrum are topics that use pattern as the starting point for design. For ‘the tree of life’ mosaic we looked at Indian tapestries and embroideries as well as details from Assyrian bas reliefs such as stylised trees and plants.
Part of the teaching will often include Printmaking, as this is a great way of demonstrating abstract design through simple repeating patterns looking at line, shape and reduced colour schemes.
